From sunlight to energy

Electricity for Your home

Two-way metering

Two-way metering (NET metering) is suitable for households that intend to use electricity produced in solar power plants for their own personal use and sell the surplus to the grid. If the electricity produced by solar panels exceeds the total consumption of household electrical appliances, the remaining amount is automatically transferred to the grid. In order for the amount for electricity resold to the grid to be automatically offset from the monthly electricity bill, it is necessary to sign a special micro-producer contract with the electricity supplier. If the amount of the electricity remaining from own consumption and resold to the grid is higher than the amount of electricity taken from and consumed from the grid, you will have an advance payment for the next month.

Profitability of solar panels

The profitability of a set of solar panels is usually 10 years, which means that in 10 years all the costs incurred will be recouped and a net profit will be made. 10 years may seem like a long time at first glance, but when you compare it to the life of the plant, it's less than half.

The profitability of solar panels is primarily related to how high the electricity prices are on the market, how well the station is installed, ie how reliable it is, and also the installation location - the direction and angle of installation. The higher the output of a solar power plant and the higher the electricity prices, the more profitable the project.

The right size solar station will help keep your electricity bills zero throughout the year. In summer, a prepayment is earned for the sale of the network, and in winter, the same prepayment is used.

Solar panel support measures

Unfortunately, there are currently no active subsidies for self-built solar plants. However, high electricity prices contribute to a shorter payback period.

The support of solar panels can be applied for from KredEx's support for the reconstruction of small houses, the round of which opens once a year. However, its volume is quite small and the past has shown that the budget is running out quite quickly. Solar panels are only a part of it.

Facts about solar power plants

Practicality

There are enough sunny days in Estonia

The sun shines in Estonia on average 1600-1900 hours a year. However, direct sunlight is not a precondition for the operation of solar power plants - daylight is also sufficient for electricity generation. Also, a cooler climate encourages the work of solar panels.

Functioning in different weather conditions

Electricity generation on a cloudy day

Energy is produced from light particles, which is why the solar station works even in cloudy weather. However, maximum productivity is achieved on a sunny day.

Effective in the long run

Long-lasting technology

One of the reasons for the growing popularity of solar power plants is their simple operation and longevity. If the installation is done properly, there will be no additional maintenance costs either during the warranty period or also later on.

Location of the plant

On the roof or on the ground?

Solar power plants can be installed either on rooftops or on the ground. When installing on a rooftop, it is essential to assess the impact of the resistance of the roof to both, the weight of the plant and panels as well as forces of the wind. On the ground, it is important to ensure that the base frames of the panels are sufficiently and firmly attached to the ground as forces of the wind are especially strong on the ground.

Maintenance

No special maintenance required

In the Estonian weather, there is no need to wash solar panels under normal circumstances - this work is done by the rain. However, if desired, the panels may be cleaned with an ordinary window cleaning agent. In addition, bird droppings and other dirt that is not easily penetrated by light particles should be washed away from the panels. When washing, care must be taken not to physically damage the panels. The panels do not need to be cleaned even after snowfall. When the sun shines on the panels, they warm up and the snow melts off without any additional effort needed.
